In the district of North Sumatra Berastagi there is a Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) the total capacity of 12 MW. The power plant named PLTP Sibayak, a joint project of Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) with Dizamatra Powerindo. Built in 1996 and completed in 2007, this power plant is the first geothermal power plants on the island of Sumatra.
Taking the heat of the earth from Mount Sibayak, the electricity from the plant was sold to PT PLN (Persero) to illuminate the province of North Sumatra and surrounding areas. Geothermal potential of Mount Sibayak is enough and safe for the environment. Geothermal Power Plant, which was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on 11 December 2007, are safe from catastrophic volcanic eruptions, for Sibayak mountain is not expected to erupt again.
With a height of 1358 m above sea level, located 70 km from Medan City and 7 Km from Berastagi town tourism, this geothermal power plant is one of three geothermal power plants managed by PT PGE than Kamojang (West Java) and Lahendong (North Sulawesi). PT PGE is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero) which is engaged in the management of geothermal energy.
PT PGE Sibayak Area themselves are trying to increase electricity generating capacity from 2 MW to 12 MW by drilling 5 (five) additional wells, along with the increasing demand of electric energy in North Sumatra. With a total capacity of 12 MW and the operation for 30 years.
Sibayak-Monoblock was decommissioned in 2010.
